When private psychology might suit you
When might I choose private psychology?
Private psychology can be a straightforward way to access psychological care.
It may suit you if:
you would prefer to arrange care without obtaining a medical referral;
you are not eligible for Medicare, TAC, workers’ compensation, EAP or another funded pathway;
you are eligible for another pathway but choose not to use it;
you have used the funded appointments available to you and would like to continue treatment privately;
you have private health insurance extras that may contribute towards psychology appointments; or
you would prefer to keep the funding and administrative arrangements directly between you and Framework Psychology.
You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or have the problem neatly worked out.
An important part of psychological care is understanding what is happening, what may be contributing and what kind of support is likely to be useful.
Private funding changes how the appointment is paid for—not the standard of psychological care.
Your psychologist will still discuss your needs, goals, treatment options, privacy and consent with you.
Possibly.
Some private health insurance extras or general treatment policies provide a benefit towards psychology appointments. Your insurer may pay either a set amount or a percentage of the appointment cost, with you paying the balance.
Psychology cover is not included in every policy. Waiting periods, rebate amounts and claim limits vary between insurers and policies.
Framework Psychology cannot determine your individual benefit on behalf of your insurer, so it is best to check your cover before your first appointment.
What should I ask my insurer?
Ask whether:
your extras policy includes psychology services;
any waiting period applies;
there is an annual, combined or psychology-specific limit;
you have any benefits remaining for the current policy year;
the insurer pays a fixed amount or percentage for each appointment;
different rebates apply for an initial and subsequent appointment;
appointments with a registered psychologist, clinical registrar or clinical psychologist are covered differently;
telehealth psychology is eligible under your policy;
the particular service you are seeking - such as treatment, assessment or report preparation - is covered; and
you need to submit the claim yourself or whether another claiming method is available.
It’s important to check your policy: psychology waiting periods, per-appointment benefits and annual limits can differ substantially between insurers and products.
Can I claim through private health insurance?
How to get started
1. Choose a psychologist or enquire about fit
You can review our psychologist profiles and appointment options, or contact us if you are unsure who may best fit your needs.
2. Book your appointment
Book an available in-person or telehealth appointment.
You do not need to provide a GP referral, Mental Health Treatment Plan or funding approval.
3. Check your health insurance ‘extras’ cover, if relevant
If you plan to claim private health insurance, contact your insurer before attending.
We will confirm the applicable Framework Psychology fees, but only your insurer can confirm your individual policy entitlement and expected rebate.
Private psychology fees
Fees for a standard 50-minute appointment from 1 July 2026 are:
Registered psychologist or clinical registrar
$230
per appointment
Clinical psychologist
$280
per appointment
Appointment fees are paid in full at the time of the appointment.
If you are eligible for a private health insurance rebate, you can then claim the applicable benefit from your insurer. Framework can provide a receipt containing the relevant appointment and provider information.
Not usually.
As a private patient, there is no funding requirement to report back to your GP or other providers.
However, if you think it would help with your care, you can ask your treating psychologist - giving your consent - for your information to be shared. If any fee applies to this type of report, we’ll let you know.
More generally, all client personal information remains confidential unless:
it is subpoenaed by a court, or disclosure is otherwise required or authorised by law; or
failure to disclose the information would in the reasonable belief of the treating psychologist place you, a client, or another person in the position of serious risk to life, health or safety; or
your prior approval has been obtained.
Will my psychologist communicate with my doctor?
Could another funding pathway apply?
Private care is always an option, but you may be eligible for assistance through another pathway.
Medicare
Transport Accident Commission (TAC)
Workers’ Compensation
NDIS
EAP or other employer-supported services
Referral, approval and eligibility requirements differ between pathways.
If you are unsure, you are welcome to enquire before booking. We can explain available funding pathways - although the relevant referrer, insurer or funding body ultimately determines eligibility.
What to expect from Framework Psychology
We begin by understanding what is happening, what matters to you and what you would like to be different.
Your psychologist will work collaboratively with you to consider your concerns, circumstances, strengths, functioning and goals.
Depending on your needs, care may include:
careful psychological assessment and formulation;
evidence-based psychological treatment;
practical strategies for everyday life;
agreed treatment goals;
review of progress over time; and
support for functioning, relationships, health, study or work.
Our approach is assessment-informed and practical. The aim is to develop a clear understanding and identify actions that are appropriate to your individual circumstances—not to assume that everyone with a particular symptom or diagnosis needs the same treatment.
Clear understanding. Practical action.

You need to choose which rebate pathway you are using for an individual psychology appointment.
Private health insurance cannot be used to cover the out-of-pocket gap for an appointment where a Medicare benefit has been claimed.
Depending on your eligibility and policy, you may choose to claim either:
a Medicare rebate under an eligible referral; or
a private health insurance extras benefit.
You cannot claim both towards the same psychology appointment.
If you have access to both pathways, compare the expected rebate, remaining limits and referral requirements before deciding which one to use.

You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis. Your psychologist will first seek to understand the concerns you are experiencing, how they are affecting you and what kind of support may be useful.
Psychology can support people with day-to-day stress, coping, change, or mental health concerns that aren’t a mental illness. But, we also welcome private patients with a known diagnosis or complex mental illness.
-
Ordinary private psychology appointments are generally considered under extras or general treatment cover, rather than hospital cover.
Hospital psychiatric cover relates to treatment received as a private hospital in-patient and is different from outpatient or private clinic psychology extras benefits.
