What psychology services will Comcare fund?

What should I expect from Framework Psychology?

Comcare may fund psychology services you need because of work-related injury or illness

These services can:

  • Help assess or diagnose your compensable injury

  • Provide treatment, through individual therapy sessions (this may include trauma-focused therapy, CBT, ACT, etc)

Psychology services will be funded when treatment is likely to improve function, participation, independence, or recovery.

All our psychology team are Ahpra-registered and members of a relevant professional body, with the relevant training and experience to provide quality services.

How many sessions are covered?

Initial sessions

Comcare funds up to five initial psychology sessions, each up to 60 minutes, before a Psychology Treatment Plan is required.

Ongoing treatment

If more than five sessions are needed, your psychologist submits a Psychology Treatment Plan (PTP) to Comcare. Ongoing treatment is funded when it:

  • Is clinically justified

  • Shows measurable progress

  • Focuses on functional improvement and return to work

Extended consultations

If at any time you need a service of longer than 60 minutes – for a relevant assessment or treatment – this requires additional prior approval from Comcare.  Your psychologist will submit an Extended Consultation Request to Comcare’s Clinical Panel to explain why this is required.

Gaps in treatment

After a gap in treatment of 12+ months, or if you attend a new psychology clinic, Comcare will require a new Psychology Treatment Plan, and confirmation that treatment is required for your work-related injury.

What fees are covered?  How does billing work?

We aim to make the process simple:

  • No out‑of‑pocket fees once your claim is accepted and approved treatment is in place.

  • We invoice Comcare directly for your psychology sessions.

  • We coordinate all required documentation (treatment plans, reports, reviews) with your Comcare claim manager.

You only need to attend your appointments—we take care of the rest.

Your appointments are covered, whether they are:

  • In-person (Kew East); or

  • Online/telehealth (Video conference, anywhere in Australia)

Comcare will not pay for non-attendance or cancellation fees. To ensure these don’t apply, please give 1+ business days’ notice if you need to cancel or change an appointment.

How do I access Comcare‑funded psychology services?

After experiencing a workplace injury or condition

  • Notify your employer and follow their internal reporting process.

  • Seek appropriate medical or health assessment.

    • If your injury or illness may result in you being unable to work, your assessment and certificate of capacity must be completed by a medical doctor.  This might be your GP or a specialist.  In completing your certificate, they will need to include if they are recommending psychology services as part of your treatment.

    • If you are still at work and your claim is only for psychology treatment costs, your psychologist can assess you, and provide a certificate (with a diagnosis, and confirming the cause of your injury or illness)

    • If you are a first responder – AFP, ABF or emergency services – experiencing PTSD, this may initially be diagnosed by a psychologist.  However, this diagnosis will still need to be accompanied by a certificate from a medical doctor for a claim.

  • You or your employer can lodge a claim online through the Comcare website.

    • This process may be different for employees of self-insured organisations

Once your claim is accepted

You can begin Comcare‑funded psychology sessions.

  • Comcare will support your first five sessions without a treatment plan

  • If ongoing therapy is recommended, we prepare and submit the Psychology Treatment Plan to your claims manager.

After each block of treatment

Your psychologist provides updated treatment plans or reviews to support continued funding.

If additional services are still required at the end of a treatment plan, your psychologist will call Comcare or your claims manager to discuss your progress and treatment needs, and will submit a further treatment plan.  Where long-term services are provided, at times Comcare may ask for a review of your treatment goals and progress.

At Framework Psychology, our experienced clinical psychologists will provide:

  • A warm, supportive, and enabling environment

  • Evidence‑based treatment tailored to your needs

  • Collaborative goal‑setting focused on recovery and function

  • Support for return‑to‑work planning where relevant

  • Clear communication with your GP, rehabilitation provider, and/or Comcare case manager (with your consent)

All treatment to injured or ill employees is provided in alignment with the principles of the Clinical Framework. We will:

  • Measure and demonstrate the effectiveness of treatment

  • Adopt a biopsychosocial approach

  • Empower you to manage your injury

  • Implement goals focused on optimising function, participation, and return to work

  • Base treatment on the best available research evidence
